"Some Mother's Son": This 1996 Irish-American film, written and directed by Terry George, is based on the true story of the 1981 hunger strike in the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland. It follows Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) prisoner Bobby Sands (John Lynch) as he leads a protest against the treatment of IRA prisoners, asserting they should be treated as prisoners of war rather than criminals. The film focuses on the mothers of two of the strikers, played by Helen Mirren and Fionnula Flanagan, as they fight to save their sons' lives. When the prisoners begin a hunger strike and become incapacitated, the mothers face the difficult decision of honoring their sons' wishes or going against them to have them forcibly fed.
Note - The travelers on the 2025 Tour of Ireland will be meeting in the Main Hall from 6:00-7:00 p.m. with the Travel Agent. Immediately following the meeting, the doors will open to members to find a seat and get settled in for the movie. Grab a drink in the pub and an announcement will be made when the movie is starting. Judge Mike Mentel will give a little intro to the movie, as it is closely related to his book “The 1981 Hunger Strike: An Account from Declassified British Documents.” We look forward to sharing this bit of Irish History with you.
Don’t forget to bring a comfy chair (if you want - we will have meeting chairs) and some movie snacks!
